Here’s to Joyce Meskis, the Woman, the Legend, the Author’s Best Friend

Joyce Meskis is a visionary, an advocate and fearless friend to authors and publishers everywhere. What a gift to all of us she has been for the 40 years at the best book store in the world, the Tattered Cover.

I knew it would happen and I’m bummed. All of us in the publishing community in Colorado knew that the clock was ticking. The legendary Joyce Meskis of the awesome Tattered Cover Book Store has announced her retirement and selling the ground-breaking stores. It won’t joyce-meskis-314c409ehappen tomorrow, but the transition is in place to be completed in two years.

Joyce is a visionary, an advocate and fearless friend to authors and publishers everywhere. What a gift to all of us.  Here’s the full story.

Arriving in Denver 25 years ago, it was a store that I walked in … no I fell in … and never wanted to leave. I’ve traveled throughout the United States, spoke in, signed in and just dropped into bookstores large and small. I loved all the book signings I had there, the stellar treatment the staff rendered to authors and customers alike. It was a pleasure to be included in “the family” of authors and earning a place on their bestseller list many times for my own books. Hands down, what she created for authors, readers, and yes publishers, is my all time favorite. bookstore tattered cover

Come to Colorado. If you fly to Denver, you will find the Tattered Cover in each Terminal–visit and buy a book, it’s the perfect browsing and buying spot. Or take the train–you will find the Tattered Cover ready to greet you in Union Station. Or head over in your car to one of the three sites within the Metro Denver area and just devour books as I do.

You too, will fall in love. Sign me, addicted to books and thankful for what Joyce created for we authors and readers. I look forward to watching what she has planned for the next stage of her journey–I know she won’t settle into a rocking chair for more than three hours.

  1. Both Joyce Meskis and Judith Briles are legends in this community!
Kudos to them both for everything they do for authors. It will be hard to have changes with our “Denver Tourist Attraction” The Tattered Cover. May it never change!

  2. Ahh Rhondda … change is a good thing, at least usually. Joyce Meskis has been in a search mode for years and I’m confident she wouldn’t announce the formal transition unless she had the perfect team in place. Love seeing the TC at the Denver airport when I travel. I haven’t been in the Union Station store yet–next time I’m in downtown Denver–it’s on my radar. Or, what the heck, take the train and experience the whole thing! I’m humble with you putting me in the same sentence with her. Judith
