Author Photos Should Be Created by a Pro

Authors need photos, plenty of them. Nothing shouts “unprofessional” like a headshot taken in front of a wall inside or outside of your house—they come across as flat, which is what you don’t want to do. A more casual headshot / “action” shot allows your personality to shine through and works well in specific areas of your marketing: Author One Sheets, Book One Sheets, websites and social media profiles. Make sure you have a Media tab on your website and include a few there that can be used

When is the last time you had a “photo shoot” by a professional photographer who “gets authors”? This is not a standard business head shot or something like a college grad photo (yet, most are). You want some casual; some in a surrounding that you love or are inspired by; some that show a sense of fun; how about a few outdoors? Authors have moved beyond the plain vanilla type of photo to one that is more reflective of their personality, their work, their play. 

TipInvest in a professional headshot(s)—one that is more “formal” and one that is more “casual.” Make sure you get the rights to use your photos in any manner you desire without have strings attached to how many times it can be used. When interviewing photographers, ask to see their portfolio samples of other authors and personalities they’ve done. Ideally, you want one price for multiple shots that you can use over and over and the photographers puts all the finished images on a disc and/or sends them to you via email. Of course, you save them in a separate folder on your computer as well as on a backup flash drive.
