Author and Writing Immersion
Last weekend found me immersed … and absorbed in art. An art form that I hadn’t experienced to the level before. Last year, I had bought tickets for the Van Gogh Immersion Experience, tucked them away, and was reminded on Friday that my Sunday slot was surfacing. I have a fat art book on Van Gogh; my Heart Mom had stitched his famous sunflower painting for me that I’ve loved for over 50 years that hangs in my second bath—reminding me each day of her.
I had two tickets and called my daughter … was she free at 10 to get to downtown Denver by 11? It was a yes. Leaving for our experience, I had already worked with one of my “collaborative coaching” Book Shepherd clients, completing the last chapter in his forthcoming book and writing the back cover for it; and polishing the opening chapter of his next book. It was a good morning and only 9 am. Now, we were walking into a darkish warehouse environment, we didn’t know exactly what to expect. Checking in, we moved forward. I was totally game for whatever was coming. Surrounded by people sitting on the floor was a 360 experience of the art of Van Gogh, fading in and out, enveloping everyone in the large space. We were lucky to nab an empty bench for two. And for 30 minutes, we were mesmerized by what unfolded. So mesmerized, we stayed to experience and absorb a second time. My daughter asked me as we left, “What do you thinking, Mom?” “Simply sensational,” was what flowed from my lips. My morning had me floating the rest of the day and evening.
For we authors, we need to allow us to immerse in what we do … and often that portal opens via something unexpected that propels you in new directions and creativity and writing. A very good thing.
