Author Tips for Creating Your Book’s Copyright Page
Does your book have a Copyright page? Please tell me YES! It’s a must have and is always placed in the “front matter” of your book.
And, not a week goes by, when I don’t get an email from an author asking: What should I have on my copyright page?
It’s an essential question, and the answer is: your publishing essentials including copyright year, who owns the copyright, publisher, contact information for it, how to order books, ISBNs, the LCCN … Library of Congress number, categories, a possible disclaimer if appropriate, contributors to the design of your book, and the country in which it was printed.
Where does it go? Another excellent question. In the “front matter” of your book and usually on the backside of your Title page—before Content page if you have one, an Author’s Note or Foreword. All before your fiction or nonfiction content begins.
There is an exception, especially with children’s books. Kids’ books usually kick-off with bright illustrations to pull young readers in right away. Many times on the page behind the title page. Authors can add an extra page to the back of the book that becomes the perfect landing spot for copyright information.
Below, I’ve included what is on the copyright page for my book, Cooking with Judith, originally published in 2025.

P.S. One more important note to add. Pay attention to the time of year you are officially going to have you book available. Any time my clients hit late August, and early September, I have them put the next year as the stated copyright year on this page. Why would I do that? Another excellent question.
You are at the end of the year. In just a few months, It’s a new year and your book now appears OLD … last year’s model. Keep it appearing “fresh and new” as long as you can stretch it.
P.S.S. And, if you create an updated version of a previously published book, don’t forget to update this page as well, adding the new year to your copyright page.
