Cut the Author Chaos: Avoid Book Publishing Blunders

Cut the Author Chaos: Avoid Book Publishing Blunders

I spend many hours in bookstores. When someone comes to my book table and asks about publishing, I listen. Repeatedly, I hear a broken record of the same old … same old mishaps and mistakes authors make. Newbie authors. And many times, experienced authors.

Answers are everywhere—via the internet, on bookshelves, via videos, and certainly from workshops. You would think that any beginning author would start with a quick search on the Internet to begin their quest. A plethora of information—how to do it; what not to do; publish your book for a few hundred bucks, become a best-seller; sell books by the boatloads—you name it, it’s out there.

Yet, a huge number of would-be authors start the process clueless … compounding mistakes … many that could have been prevented with a little prep work. And there are many experience authors who practice the art of repetition.

It’s time for a redirect. Within my book, How to Avoid Book Publishing Blunders, I named four key themes.

Theme 1: Clarity Over Confusion

Too many authors get lost in options—formats, cover designs, distribution channels, and marketing gimmicks—that dilute their book’s message or waste time and money. Can you simplify? Do a check in. Who is your book for?

What does your reader need? Are you still the one to deliver it? Do you need to do a repackaging?

Theme 2: Structure and Readability Matter

Readers don’t get to the end of a book because of clever marketing alone. They stay because the book is easy to read, logically organized, and delivers repeatable “aha” moments. Have you checked into your book’s readability factors—headings, pacing, chapter structure, and formatting—that increase comprehension and satisfaction. It’s less about bells and whistles and more about crafting a layout and voice that respects the reader’s time. And stands for you.

Theme 3: Contracts, Costs, and Confidence

Another big thread is financial and legal savvy. Do you really know what your costs are? What your breakeven is? When was the last time you looked over any contracts you committed to? Signed? That are still active? With the bombardment of AI, most authors are pummeled … almost on a daily basis with scams arriving through emails and texts.

Theme 4: Momentum that Lasts

Marketing is not a one-off burst; it’s a sustained effort where a long run is needed. Most authors never get that marketing parallels their writing side. Authors need to build a marketing engine long before a book is published. If that was a miss, then it becomes a priority focus today.

For anyone serious about publishing, the four elements above provide the map you wished you had before your first big mistake.

Ultimately, How to Avoid Book Publishing Blunders is a call to professionalize your process. It’s not about fear; it’s about smart moves, step-by-step execution, and protecting your author career.

My truthiness: Publishing success starts with ending common missteps.

Where do you need to take a closer look and take action?
