The Freedom of the Seas is our floating classroom for the 4th annual Publishing at Sea Conference. From my balcony room, I was fascinated by the boating traffic pre-port departure. Always intrigued by the many yachts of sizes beyond imagination, one small craft immediately caught my attention. A sleek oversized speedboat, with a dark blue canopy of sorts over the captain’s controls.
On it’s, side was a logo I hadn’t seen in our waters before:
Now, the motors made sense. This wasn’t the Coast Guard’s search and rescue … this was a different type of search operation.
Which is what authors sometimes do. As stories unfold in fiction and solutions and ahas are revealed in nonfiction, authors are on a mission …. searching for answers to questions and problems. Sometimes, a casual speed in the discovery process isn’t good enough—extra energy and push is needed.
This afternoon, we had a meet and greet—what a diverse group and variety of books we have this year. All met the faculty: Daniel Hall, Kelly Johnson, Joan Stewart, Amy Collins, Nick Zelinger and myself. And then we had the opportunity to meet all of them and hear about their books. .So looking forward to the hot seats Joan Stewart and I will be doing later in the week with many of them. And over dinner, I came up with an idea that I think will be “hot” … a way to look through my eyes as I create marketing strategies implementing social media.
Tomorrow is the beginning of the extra push that many authors need. We have 6 hours of classroom … I can hardly wait!
PLUS … I have news for authors who are already have books in print … The ship will sponsor and support not one … but TWO special book signings featuring ALL of them. Passengers will be invited to meet and greet our authors and by their books. How cool is that?!
We capped the evening off with a fun comedy show—Joan Stewart and I loved laughing!
it’s going to be a great week long workshop with plenty of time for play and networking in the Caribbean sun.
Bon Voyage … Wish you were here!
