You only have one tip for today … but it’s an important one … one that can make book designers and editors batty when it’s violated.
Apparently, many writers and authors didn’t get the memo about the one-space rule. It’s been the norm for decades. Every major style guide—including the Modern Language Association Style Manual and the Chicago Manual of Style—prescribes a single space after a period. Yet, manuscript after manuscript that comes in has the chronic double space after each sentence. When asked, “Why do you do it this way?” authors universally say, “It’s what I was taught when I took typing.”
Stop it. It puts you in the dinosaur age … and it’s going to cost money to undue all of it. Money that you are kissing off and a totally unnecessary expense. Yes, the salad fork goes on the left and fashion designers know that women’s buttons go on the left side of the blouse as well. But the double space between sentences? Nope … it’s arcade and not acceptable.
So break your double thumb clicking and come current.
One space only is your new motto. Thank you.
