Insider Tips I Use to Write Taglines That Stick and Sell

Welcome to the Mindset Meets Messaging Zone!
You’re a business builder of a certain age, which means you’re prone to sentimental moments that make you dab your eyes.
This edition of Brand Message Victory™ may create one of those moments.
That’s because I’ll be covering how to write taglines and slogans.
And I have a few examples from the way-back machine that may make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
But the larger point is this:
Creating taglines that folks immediately associate with your product or service can be marketing gold.
You’re about to find out why…
The First Section of Your Core Message Platform™
Right now I’m working on a Core Message Platform™ for a new client. As usual, the first section of my document is a list of tagline ideas for their product.
And if you need a quick reminder…
A Core Message Platform™ is a 15- to 20-page stash of benefit-driven messages about your program, product, or service.
Think of it as your master messaging playbook.
And your master messaging playbook should always include tagline or slogan ideas.
Why? Because taglines are like quick-hit memory hooks that prospects instantly connect to your product, program, or service.
The Trick
Keep your taglines short, simple, and state or imply a benefit.
Here’s one I wrote for LumiWave, a product from BioCare Systems that uses infrared light and heat to reduce pain:
LumiWave™
Pain Relief. The Light Way.
Here’s another I wrote for Mentor Corporation’s human dermis product, Axis. It’s engineered with multi-directional fibers, making it stronger than competitive products.
Axis™
Strength In Every Direction
Both taglines work because they’re short, simple, easy to remember, and they communicate a clear benefit.
More Proof
Check out these all-time classic taglines from back in the day. When I mentioned I had some sentimental examples, this is where I was headed.
All-State Insurance: You’re in Good Hands with Allstate
Coca Cola: Things Go Better With Coke
Metropolitan Life Insurance: Get Met. It Pays.
KFC: Finger Licking Good
If these examples don’t choke you up just a bit, this next one will.
And if it doesn’t, you’ll still see how a tagline can be embedded into your memory for decades.
Winston cigarettes: Winston Tastes Good….
Do you remember the rest of it? If you’re around my age, I think you might.
Winston Tastes Good Like a Cigarette Should
If you remember this tagline, it’s because you heard it on television a ton of times when you were a little dude. But here’s what’s interesting…
Cigarette ads on television were banned in 1971. That’s 55 years ago!
So if you remember the Winston tagline, or even the old Coca Cola tagline, it’s proof that…
Well-crafted taglines and slogans can be embedded into people’s brains for a really long time, so they never forget your product or program!
Lastly…
Take a second look at my tagline examples. You’ll notice that nearly every word is only one or two syllables.
That’s the secret. Short, simple, punchy words = memorable taglines.
And memorable taglines create a positive product image that sticks.
If you haven’t already, hit subscribe to keep the brand message quick hits coming your way.
Until next time, take a lot of action… and make things happen.
