Holy Moly … how can JUNE already be here? Really? As a kid, I lived on the strand of Hermosa Beach in Southern California. June kicked off the packed weekend beach time. Which meant out came in the old wagon I had found and my barefoot walking feet as I scouted the weekend sunbathers slurping sodas and beers. Why? you might be thinking. Because my 7-year-old self quickly learned that there was money for me in those empty discarded bottles.

Never cross my mind that when I would ask beach visitors as I combed the sand between the sand and surf, “Could I have your empty bottles,” I was doing an environmental thing (the word wasn’t even in the discussions at that time—hello the 50s). What I was doing was the entrepreneurial thing. I got two cents a soda bottle and five cents a quart beer bottle. My walk-around money for several years until I was 11.

I would then pull my bottle filled wagon to The Green Store two blocks away (yes, that’s what its true name was) and cash in, heading back to the beach for another collection.

Yup, summertime is here—sun, mostly blue skies, the garden is doing its thing, the deck beckons to me, meals outside … and I’m loving it.
