Dr. Judith’s Saturday Blog – Be A Doer … Not a Dreamer

What separates boring writing from hot writing?

One word: emotion … as in lack of it.

It’s the blah versus juicy that separates the mundane from the page-turner.

The author who writes in the telling mode risks losing the eyes of the reader.

Don’t write the “fish are in the pond.”

Write:

How the brilliance of the day glistens on the magnificent copper and black koi backs …

How the three fish shimmer and glide under and through the lily pads, surfacing to snag the dropped pellets …

How the setting sun creates shadows darkening the brilliant tangerine and yellow colors …

How the alpha koi jets to the surface to claim his morsel prize, pushing the others out of his way …

When you do, you’ve revealed to your reader a new world … not just another word or nondescript phrase. Your reader envisions what you wrote.
